August 10th from 5pm to 7pm, Kutik’s Everything Bees will be hosting its first Inside The Hive class. This class will be one part informational, one part working and inspecting a live honey bee colony. For the first hour, we will discuss and examine hive signifiers we may encounter, including mite issues, spatial problems, honey stores, and how to properly read a frame of bees. Within the hands-on portion of the class, we will examine several of our hives for the aforementioned issues. We will also conduct a sugar shake to assess our current mite load and, depending on our mite threshold, apply an appropriate treatment. As this is a newly established apiary, we will observe how the hives have developed and decide which maneuvers are necessary as we move towards the bees’ final push before winter.
As this class is new to our roster, we will be limiting seating to four people—and we will offer an introductory rate of $35 dollars. Students will be asked to assess the class prior to their departure.
As we will be working with live bees, all students must have their own protective gear. Lastly, this class will run regardless of the weather. If it is overcast or raining, we will still examine the hives, as they are protected from the rain.
Reservations are required, as seating is limited. 607-843-2337. Press 1 when prompted.
